Women's soccer battles to 0-0 tie at Binghamton

Oct. 2, 2011

Final Stats

Vestal, N.Y. - The Stony Brook women's soccer team earned its first shutout of the season on Sunday in a 0-0 draw at Binghamton. Sophomore Chelsea Morales (Temecula, Calif.) made nine saves as the Seawolves picked up a hard-earned point in the conference standings.

"The defense played very well and we're very happy that we didn't give anything up," head coach Sue Ryan said. "Chelsea was solid in goal and the back line battled all game."

Binghamton (4-6-1, 1-1-1 America East) pressed forward early in the match and nearly snatched a goal in the first minute of action as Sarah Furminger's shot glanced off the crossbar and stayed out. Seconds later, Morales denied the Bearcats again with a save on a Kaitlyn Cook attempt.

Sophomore Caitlin Pfeiffer (Holland, N.Y.) was presented a scoring opportunity midway through the first half on a breakaway, but her attempt was tipped away by Binghamton keeper Carrie Martin and trickled wide. The attempt represented the only shot on net for the Seawolves (3-8-1, 1-1-1 America East) in the opening half, but Morales and the Seawolves defense denied the Bearcats a goal despite seven attempts by the hosts in the first 45 minutes.

Stony Brook's offense came to life in the second stanza as junior Taryn Schoenbeck (Newark, Del.) put a shot wide of the target four minutes into the second half. Schoenbeck then fired wide once again in the 62nd minute as the Seawolves continued to seek the game's first goal.

Nothing was decided after 90 minutes of play and the teams went into overtime, the first extra-session the Seawovles had played this season. Junior Sa'sha Kershaw (Baltimore, Md.) opened the period with a shot that was stopped by Martin just 34 seconds into the frame. Both teams then exchanged shots that went wide as the first OT came to an end with the score still tied 0-0.

Neither team could generate any offense in the second overtime as the clock expired with 110 minutes of scoreless soccer in the books.

Stony Brook returns to action on Thursday when it travels to Hartford for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
