Cambridge, Mass. - The Stony Brook women's soccer team was picked to finish second in the America East preseason coaches' poll, as announced by the conference office on Monday. Boston University was tabbed as the unanimous preseason favorite, receiving all eight possible first-place votes as coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.
The Seawolves garnered 56 points in the poll, eight shy of BU's 64. Albany and Maine tied for third with 39 points, while New Hampshire was selected fifth with 36. Hartford was slotted sixth with 35, Binghamton took seventh with 26, and UMBC and Vermont rounded out spots eight and nine, respectively.
Stony Brook returns 17 letterwinners and eight starters after finishing second in the conference standings last season with a 5-2-1 mark. Senior Dominique Adamo (Ramsey, N.J.) is the team's leading returning scorer following a six-goal, 17-point season in 2010. Defensively, the squad returns senior Alexis Lindo (York, Pa.), a second-team All-Conference performer last year, along with goalkeeper Chelsea Morales (Temecula, Calif.), who earned an All-Rookie nod in 2010 as well.
The Seawolves will open the 2011 campaign on Friday, Aug. 19 at Siena. The team's home opener is set for Monday, Aug. 22 against Iona at 7 p.m.
