Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior Dana Adamkiewicz (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) has been named the captain of the Stony Brook women's soccer team, as announced by head coach Sue Ryan on Wednesday. Adamkiewicz, one of six seniors on the squad, has played in 40 career matches entering the season.
Adamkiewicz saw action in 12 games last year and was a member of a Stony Brook defense that posted three shutouts. In 2009, the Port Jefferson Station native was one of two Seawolves to start all 19 games, during which time she scored her first collegiate goal and registered two assists. Adamkiewicz's goal came at a crucial moment as she netted the game-winner in the 66th minute against Binghamton on October 4.
A health science major, Adamkiewicz was previously a team captain as a senior at Comsewogue High School.
"With leadership comes a lot of responsibility," Adamkiewicz admitted. "I've learned that over the years with our previous seniors, so I feel ready."
Adamkiewicz and the Seawolves will open the 2011 season on Friday at Siena.
