Stony Brook, N.Y. - After Friday's match at Siena was called off due to lightning, the Stony Brook women's soccer team will now open the 2011 season at home against Iona on Monday at 7 p.m. The Seawolves hold a 13-4-1 all-time record against the Gaels dating back to 1985.
The Seawolves were only able to complete 24 minutes of game action against Siena on Friday, before thunder and lightning forced the game to an abrupt end. The score was tied 0-0 at the time of the cancellation.
Iona was able to complete its opening match this weekend and fell to Temple, 1-0. A second-half own-goal proved to be the difference in the match, despite the Gaels outshooting the Owls by an 11-7 margin.
Iona and Stony Brook met last season in New Rochelle, N.Y. and the Gaels prevailed by a 1-0 count. Stony Brook outshot Iona, 14-11, but were undone by an Abby Dixon strike in the 34th minute. Then-freshman Chelsea Morales (Temecula, Calif.) made six stops in net for the Seawolves.
Monday's matchup will hold added significance for new Stony Brook assistant coach Eric Teepe, who coached the Gaels between 2006-10.
