Harrisonburg, Va. - Fresh off a season-opening victory over Iona, the Stony Brook women's soccer team will travel to the James Madison Tournament this weekend to take on Delaware and the host Dukes. The Seawolves will face the Blue Hens on Friday at 5 p.m. and JMU on Sunday at 1:30.
Stony Brook rallied from 1-0 down to defeat Iona by a 2-1 count on Monday at LaValle Stadium. Junior Sa'sha Kershaw (Baltimore, Md.) scored the game-winner in the 59th minute and assisted on sophomore Caitlin Pfeiffer's (Holland, N.Y.) game-tying goal in the 56th. The Seawolves outshot the Gaels by a 17-6 margin with Pfeiffer leading the team with five shot attempts.
The Seawolves' opponent on Friday, Delaware fell to La Salle in its season opener, 2-0. The Blue Hens return their top two leading scorers from last year in Ali Miller (17 points) and Shannon Kearney (12 points), in addition to senior keeper Breanna Stemler. Stony Brook is 3-3-0 all-time against Delaware, but has not faced the Blue Hens since 2004.
James Madison has played a challenging slate so far in 2011, drawing Big East foe Villanova 1-1 in its opener, before falling to Virginia Tech 3-1 last Sunday. Prior to the season, the Dukes were selected to repeat as conference champions after making a run to the second round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago. Sunday's matchup will be the first-ever meeting between Stony Brook and James Madison.
