Stony Brook, N.Y. - Despite outshooting Army by a 14-12 margin, the Stony Brook women's soccer team fell short in its bid for a second win on Friday in a 2-0 loss at LaValle Stadium. Sophomore Chelsea Morales (Temecula, Calif.) made five saves in the defeat.
Stony Brook (1-7-0) enjoyed the best scoring chance of the first half when sophomore Caitlin Pfeiffer (Holland, N.Y.) deflected a shot on target 20 minutes from the opening whistle. Neither team could break through in the first 45 minutes, however, and the squads headed into the locker rooms in a scoreless tie, the fifth consecutive game that Stony Brook has been tied 0-0 at half.
Army struck 15 minutes into the second frame when Melissa McLaws poked home a rebound off a corner kick. Morales initially made a big stop on a Kim An header, but the ball dropped in the penalty area, and after a scramble, McLaws found it and buried it for the game's opening goal.
The Black Knights (5-1-2) then added an insurance marker in the 88th minute when Dee Clegg played a ball through the Stony Brook defense to Errin Helbling for a breakaway. Helbling calmly took a touch around the pressing Morales and slotted it into the empty cage to put the visitors ahead 2-0.
The Seawolves were not devoid of chances in the second half and pressed hard for long stretches in the closing minutes. Junior Sa'sha Kershaw (Baltimore, Md.) poked a shot just wide with 22 minutes remaining, before Pfeiffer latched onto a Kershaw feed and fired into the arms of Army keeper Monica Lee. Freshman Regan Bosnyak (Newington, Conn.) then came close with six minutes left as she headed a Julianne Palm (Stilwell, Kansas) cross wide of the goal from the center of the box.
Stony Brook will head to Fairfield on Sunday for a matchup with the Stags in the final non-conference game of the 2011 season. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
