Cambridge, Mass. - Junior Larissa Nysch (Dresher, Pa.) of the Stony Brook women's soccer team was named the America East Player of the Week on Monday, as announced by the conference office. Nysch scored twice in Thursday's 5-1 win over Maine and leads the team with six goals on the season.
Nysch is the third Seawolf to garner Player of the Week accolades this season as junior Caitlin Pfeiffer (Holland, N.Y.) and senior Sa'sha Kershaw (Baltimore, Md.) have also earned the honor in 2012.
In Thursday's match against the Black Bears, Nysch scored the first two goals of the game just 48 seconds apart at 15:19 and 16:07 of the first half. Goals by freshman Raven Edwards (West Orange, N.J.), senior Taryn Schoenbeck (Newark, Del.) and freshman Aley Leonardi (Kennebunkport, Maine) followed as the Seawolves (8-5-3, 2-3-1 AE) netted five goals for the first time in three years.
Nysch leads the team with six goals and 15 points through 16 games; prior to this season, the Dresher, Pa. native had seven career points in 30 games.
In the thick of the America East playoff race, the Seawolves wrap up the regular season this week at New Hampshire on Thursday and at home vs. Hartford on Sunday. Stony Brook is currently fifth in the conference standings with seven points; the top six teams advance to the playoffs.
