Cambridge, Mass. - Freshman Raven Edwards (West Orange, N.J.) of the Stony Brook women's soccer team was named the America East Rookie of the Week, as announced by the conference office Monday. The third SBU freshman to take home Rookie of the Week honors this season, Edwards bagged the OT winner last Thursday at New Hampshire.
After a scoreless deadlock through the first 100 minutes, the Seawolves (9-6-3, 3-4-1 AE) turned up the offensive pressure in the second overtime. Just seconds after a Stony Brook corner kick, senior Sa'sha Kershaw (Baltimore, Md.) gathered a loose ball on the left wing and sent a cross into the box. The ball took a deflection off a defender, but landed on the foot of Edwards at the far post, who directed it off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net for a 1-0 win.
The goal was Edwards' third game-winner of the season and second overtime tally after netting the extra-time winner against Army on Aug. 31. Through 18 regular season games, Edwards is tied for second on the team with 12 points, including five goals. In addition, Edwards is the second-highest scoring freshman in the America East this season, trailing only New Hampshire's Kirstyn Corder who has 13 points.
Edwards joins Kristen Baker (Easley, S.C.) and Aley Leonardi (Kennebunkport, Maine) as the Seawolves' Rookie of the Week recipients in 2012. Kershaw and juniors Caitlin Pfeiffer (Holland, N.Y.) and Larissa Nysch (Dresher, Pa.) have also been honored by the conference with Player of the Week accolades this season.
The playoff-bound Seawolves will travel to UNH once again on Thursday for an America East Quarterfinal matchup at 2 p.m.
