Stony Brook, N.Y. - Freshman Raven Edwards (West Orange, N.J.) of the Stony Brook women's soccer team was named the Women's Player of the Week by Big Apple Soccer on Monday. Edwards scored the game-winning goal in overtime on Friday at Army to give Stony Brook its first win over the Black Knights since 1987.
After 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Seawolves struck quickly in the extra session as junior Larissa Nysch (Dresher, Pa.) fed Edwards, who skillfully maneuvered through two defenders before firing a shot just inside the right post for the win.
Through six games, Edwards is tied for the team lead with two goals and four points. Both of Edwards' goals have been game-winners as the freshman also potted the deciding strike against Wagner on Aug. 24.
On Tuesday, the Seawolves (4-1-1) were ranked No. 9 in the NSCAA Northeast Regional Poll. Stony Brook has won four straight and is unbeaten in its last five matches heading into this Friday's contest at Rutgers at 7 p.m.
