#Seawolves Major Leaguers garner big attention this week

Sept. 5, 2014

UPDATE: Nick Tropeano is scheduled to make his Major League debut as the Astros starting pitcher on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at Seattle

Stony Brook, N.Y. - As Stony Brook baseball continues to sustain incredible success on the field and developing student-athletes into professionals, this week was banner for the program as former #Seawolves All-American pitcher Nick Tropeano was called up to the Major Leagues by the Houston Astros, and SNY ran a half-inning segment on former #Seawolves All-America East pitcher Tom Koehler during Wednesday's Mets-Marlins game.

Tropeano became the third #Seawolves baseball player to reach the Majors, joining Koehler and six-time MLB All-Star Joe Nathan, who was a star at Stony Brook in the mid-1990s. Newsday spoke to Tropeano after receiving the news, and in describing his time at Stony Brook said, "I'm definitely always going to be close to the Seawolves and Stony Brook for the opportunity they gave me and for the experience and the maturity they brought to me."

Koehler, who is firmly entrenched in the Marlins starting rotation, is 9-9 with a 3.74 ERA this season. During his seven-inning outing against the Mets on Wednesday, he struck out a career-high 10 batters. The SNY segment, reported on by Kevin Burkhardt, focused on his days at Stony Brook under head coach Matt Senk. Watch the video above for more information.

Stony Brook currently has seven other former student-athletes playing Minor League Baseball, including 2012 MLB Draft first-round selection Travis Jankowski. Read more about where they are in Seawolves in the Pros.
