Duval nets overtime goal, Seawolves down Albany 2-1

Oct. 3, 2015

Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Sophomore Thibault Duval (Grace Hollogne, Belgium) picked a great time to score his first goal of the season, finding the back of the net with 26 seconds left in the second overtime to lead the Stony Brook men's soccer team (4-4-2, 1-0-0 AE) past Albany (5-4-1, 0-1-0 AE) 2-1 in both teams' conference openers Saturday night.

Anatol's Reaction
"I am happy to get a result," said head coach Ryan Anatol. "Starting with three points is a great way to open conference play. I thought the guys did a terrific job tonight in difficult conditions. The wind made it tough to play at times but I thought our guys battled and ultimately we were the better team tonight."

Highlights

  • The Seawolves took a 1-0 lead before Albany ever touched the ball, taking the opening kickoff and working the ball to senior Martin Giordano (Weston, Fla.). The forward cut inside and lofted a ball to the back post, beating the keeper for his fifth goal of the season just 14 seconds in the match. Freshman Martieon Watson (Vessigny, Trinidad) and senior Alejandro Fritz (Budapest, Hungary) recorded the assists on the play.
  • Albany's Afonso Pinheiro scored his league-leading eighth goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 in the 12th minute, rifling a left-footed shot into the upper 90.
  • Fritz had two great chance to recapture the lead for Stony Brook in the first half. His first opportunity came on a free kick, but he curled his effort inches wide. Minutes later he got on the end of a cross from sophomore Danny Espinoza (East Meadow, N.Y.), but shot it wide.
  • Sophomore Vince Erdei (Budapest, Hungary) took a feed from freshman Serge Gamwanya (Kinshasa, Congo) early in the second half and walked in alone on goal, but his breakaway shot was saved.
  • Pinheiro had a chance to win the game with under seven minutes left in regulation, but shot wide from only six yards out.
  • It appeared as though the teams would split the points until Duval found the back of the net. Sophomore Andreas Aderiye (Germantown, Md.) challenged an aerial ball, creating chaos in the opponent's box. The ball eventually squirted to Duval who buried the chance with a calm side-foot finish.

Notes

  • Stony Brook outshot Albany 17-10 for the match and 3-1 in the overtime periods.
  • Fritz, who led Stony Brook with six shots, regained the conference lead in assists with his fifth of the season.
  • Senior Jason Orban (Manorville, N.Y.) made three saves to improve his record to 4-4-2 on the season.
  • Giordano set new career-highs for goals scored (5) and points (13).
  • The Seawolves are now 2-0 in overtime games this season. They beat Marist by the same scoreline on Sep. 16.
