Stony Brook, N.Y.  -
The Stony Brook men’s soccer team opens up its 2015 campaign with a pair of home match ups vs. Northeast Conference schools in Central Connecticut State and Sacred Heart.

The Seawolves square off with the Blue Devils on Friday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. before taking on the Pioneers on Monday, Aug. 31 at the same time.

Scouting Central Connecticut State

The Blue Devils are coming off a 5-10-2 season in 2014, however one of their wins was a 1-0 defeat of Stony Brook in both teams’ season opener. Returning is senior Zach Zurita, the top returning goal scorer with three en route to second team All-NEC honors. Also back is the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year, Filosmar Cordeiro, who was second on the team last year with seven points on two goals and three assists.

Scouting Sacred Heart

The Seawolves defeated Sacred Heart 4-2 last season thanks to a two goal, two assist game from Thibault Duval (Grace Hollogne, Belgium). Sacred Heart ended the season winless in 18 matches, recording draws against Yale and Bryant.

The Pioneers return 18 players from last season, including leading goal scorer Mahmoud Kafel. The senior midfielder had four goals and nine points in 2014 and has led SHU in goals in each of the last two seasons.

Senior Leadership

Senior midfielders Alejandro Fritz (Budapest, Hungary) and Martin Giordano lead the Seawolves into the 2015 season after garnering America East second team all-conference recognition in 2014. Giordano led the team with four goals, while Fritz finished the season with three goals and two assists.

Experienced Group

Stony Brook returns 12 players who made at least one start last year and 14 who saw game action. Returning players accounted for 10 of last year’s 17 goals and 15 of 21 assists.
