Seawolves begin playoffs hosting Vermont

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook women's soccer team earned the No. 3 seed in the America East Playoffs and looks to keep the season going as it hosts six-seeded Vermont Thursday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. at LaValle Stadium. This is the first playoff appearance for the Seawolves since the 2013 season, who topped the Catamounts earlier this year, 2-0. at home. Tickets will be sold for this event at the entrance gate and cost $8 for adults, $5 for children (14 and under), and free for all Stony Brook students who show their student ID at the gate.

The Catamounts finished the regular season as the No. 7 team in the league, but with UMass Lowell being unable to participate in the post season (transition to DI), Vermont moved to the six-spot in this year's tournament with a 2-4-2 record in league play. It also sits at 7-7-3 overall on the year. Julia Smith leads the team with five goals on the year, while Sarah Martin and Caitie Green each add three goals and two assists. Coco Speckmaier boasts the team's record in goal, as well as a 1.07 GAA and .819 save percentage. Vermont has tallied five shutouts on the year, and outshoots its opponents 237-217.
 
Last Meeting
The Seawolves made it back-to-back shutouts at home when they topped Vermont, 2-0, in early October. Stony Brook outshot the Catamounts 9-8 in the game. Sophomore Julie Johnstonbaugh (Neshanic Station, N.J.) headed in a goal off a Hannah Groth (Cedarburg, Wisc.) corner and later helped set up a Raven Edwards (West Orange, N.J.) goal in the 86th minute.
 
Comfortable at Home
The Seawolves strung together six-straight victories at LaValle Stadium and outscored their opponent 12-2 in their final six home games. Sophomore goalie Cara Gallagher (Massapequa, N.Y.) has made 22 saves and allowed just two goals during the stint, while seven different Stony Brook players have scored a goal.
 
In the Record Books
Stony Brook strung together six straight wins during conference season, which set a new record in the program's Division I history. Edwards currently ranks fifth in scoring (24) and is tied for sixth in points (56) in the Seawolves' all-time record book, but will finish her career as the leader in points and goals in the program's Division I history. Gallagher has tallied seven shutouts on the season, which ranks tied for third on the all-time single-season goalkeeping list.
 
Playoff Outlook
The Seawolves finished the season third in the America East standings with a 6-2-0 record. This is the first playoff appearance for Stony Brook since the 2013 season. Hartford and Albany shared the regular season title and both earned first-round byes. Albany awaits the winner of the New Hampshire/Maine quarterfinal game, while the winner of the Stony Brook/Vermont game will face second-seeded Hartford in the semifinals on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. The championship game will be played the following weekend, Nov. 5/6.
