Stony Brook comes up short against USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. &ndash; The Stony Brook baseball team (1-2) was unable to hold off USC Upstate on Sunday afternoon and fell, 8-6, on the final day of the Wofford Tournament at Harley Park.

The Spartans (3-0) used a three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to retake the lead for good after the Seawolves plated four runs in the sixth inning.

Junior SS Jeremy Giles (Claremont, Calif.), junior CF Toby Handley (Whitby, Ontario), junior C David Real (Chandler, Ariz.) and sophomore RF Andruw Gazzola (Coram, N.Y.) each collected two hits, while junior 1B Casey Baker (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) drove in a pair of runs in the loss.

Turning Point
Stony Brook battled back to take a 6-5 lead with four runs in the sixth inning, but Upstate retook the lead with a three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning by Jordan Ford.

Notes
- Junior RHP Connor Doyle (Maspeth, N.Y.), started on the mound Sunday, marking his first start since the 2014 season. He missed last season due to an injury.
- Five players have hit safely in each of the Seawolves&rsquo; three games. Junior SS Jeremy Giles (Claremont, Calif.) and junior CF Toby Handley (Whitby, Ontario) are 5-for-10 this season, junior C David Real (Chandler, Ariz.) is 5-for-11, senior LF Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y.) is 4-for-12 and sophomore 2B Bobby Honeyman (Massapequa, N.Y.) is 3-for-12.
- Junior 1B Casey Baker (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) has driven in eight runs this season.
