Stony Brook travels to No. 15 Penn State on Friday night in NCAA Tournament

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook women's soccer will travel to No. 15 Penn State in the first round of the 2017 Division I Women's Soccer Championship on Friday, Nov. 10. The first-round meeting will be the first ever between the two programs, with kickoff from Jeffrey Field scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday night.
 
The field of 64 total teams - which will compete for the 36th NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship - was announced on Monday, Nov. 6 during the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Selection Show.

  • The Seawolves (11-10-0, 4-4-0 AEC) topped Vermont, 2-1, on Sunday, Nov. 5 in the 2017 America East Women's Soccer Championship, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in program history. 
  • Alyssa Francese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Manuela Corcho (Norwalk, Conn.) both scored in the victory for the Seawolves. 
  • Kimmy Chavkin (Franklin, N.J.)Sydney Vaughn (Ballwin, MO.)Manuela Corcho (Norwalk, Conn.) and Franki Priore (Merrick, N.Y.) were all named to the America East All-Championship Team. Vaughn earned the tournament's Most Outstanding Player Award. 
Postseason History
Stony Brook has been to the NCAA Tournament on just one other occasion (2012), falling vs. No. 9 Maryland on Nov. 10, 2012 in the first round. The program has been to the conference finals five times (2002, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2017).

Head Coach Brendan Faherty
  • With a victory over Hartford in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament, Head Coach Brendan Faherty earned his 100th career victory as a collegiate head coach. 
  • Faherty won 82 games over eight seasons at the University of New Haven, and has 20 wins over his first two years at the helm of the Seawolves' program. The Seawolves have been to the postseason in two straight seasons since Faherty's arrival.
  • Faherty has led Stony Brook to a 10-6-0 record vs. conference opponents over his first two years with the program.
  • Stony Brook won a Division-I era record six-straight America East wins in 2016, becoming the first first-year head coach to earn America East Coach of the Year honors.
Scouting Penn State
  • The Nittany Lions enter the NCAA Tournament as the No. 3 overall seed, posting a 12-4-4 record so far in 2017. The program topped Rutgers, Ohio State and Northwestern to become champions of the Big Ten Tournament.
  • Penn State is 7-0-1 at home so far this year, outscoring opponents 19-3 when playing at Jeffrey Field.
  • Nine different players have scored multiple goals this year for Penn State, led by Megan Schafer (five goals, three assists).
Offensive Outburst
Stony Brook's offense has been red-hot as of late, scoring 17 times over the last 10 contests. The Seawolves rank No. 71 in the country in total goals (33) and No. 68 nationally in total assists (30). Both marks rank best in the America East.
 
Super Sophia
Freshman goalkeeper and reigning America East Rookie of the Year Sophia Manner (Helsinki, Finland) has allowed just one goal since the start of postseason play, recording 14 saves in the process. Manner and the Seawolves' defensive unit have surrendered just seven goals over the last 10 games.
 
Corcho in the Clutch
Senior Manuela Corcho (Norwalk, Conn.) is finishing her senior season in impressive fashion, scoring in each of the program's last two postseason wins. Corcho scored in the 76th minute of Stony Brook's semifinal matchup vs. top-seeded New Hampshire, then scored the Seawolves' second goal during the championship win over Vermont.
 
All-Conference Awards
  • Five Seawolves took home 2017 America East Women's Soccer All-Conference awards, as announced by the league office on Oct. 25, 2017.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Sofia Manner (Helsinki, Finland) was named America East Rookie of the Year, senior Franki Priore (Merrick, N.Y.) and junior Kaitlin Loughren (Huntington, N.Y.) were named to the America East Second Team, and Manner, Alyssa Francese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Fanny Gotesson (Varnamo, Sweden) were named to the America East All-Rookie team.
Goals on Goals
Stony Brook has scored 33 goals so far this season, which ranks No. 1 in the America East.
 
Clutch in the Conference 
The Seawolves surrendered just seven goals in conference play during the regular season, tied for No. 1 in the America East.

Non-Conference Success
Stony Brook finished the 2017 non-conference portion of its schedule with four wins – the most victories in non-conference action for the program since the 2013 season.

Stony Brook has earned six America East weekly award honors so far this year: 2017 Preseason Poll
Stony Brook women's soccer was tabbed to finish No. 4 in the 2017 America East Women's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the conference on Wednesday, Aug. 9. The Seawolves finished with 45 total votes in the preseason poll. Hartford will enter 2017 as the favorite, receiving 58 total points (three first-place votes). Albany received 57 points (five first-place votes), and New Hampshire checked in just ahead of Stony Brook with 51 votes (one first-place vote).
 
2016 Season
Faherty guided the Seawolves to a 9-8-3 record during his first year with the program in 2016. The team earned its first America East playoff appearance since the 2013 season after notching a Division-I era record six straight conference wins in league play. Faherty earned America East Coach of the Year honors, and saw six players earn all-conference accolades, including two on the first team.
