STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Joe Nathan, Stony Brook Hall of Famer and six-time Major League Baseball All-Star, will extend his career with the Washington Nationals organization after signing a minor league contract with the club last week.
Nathan, a short stop for the Seawolves in the early 1990's, has 377 career saves in his 16-year MLB career, the second most among active players. Nathan was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the sixth round of the 1995 amateur draft and made his major league debut in 1999 with the Gaints. He was a four-time All-Star while pitching for the Minnesota Twins and later was named to two All-Star rosters as a closer for the Texas Rangers.Â
Nathan hopes to join Miami Marlins pitcher Tom Koehler, Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Tropeano and San Diego Padres outfielder Travis Jankowski as former Seawolves in the major leagues for the 2017 season.
