STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The first-place Stony Brook men's soccer team will take on Vermont on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m from Virtue Field in Burlington, Vt.
The Seawolves come into the contest with a six-point lead in the America East after topping New Hampshire, 1-0, on Oct. 13 from LaValle Stadium.
Seawolves Notes
- The Seawolves enter play as the only America East team without a conference loss.
- Freshman goalkeeper Christian Miesch (Brig, Switzerland) picked up his fourth career shutout in the win over New Hampshire. He made nine saves in the victory and was named America East Defensive Player of the Week.
- Stony Brook is led by senior Serge Gamwanya (Trondheim, Norway), who has five goals on the season. He's won America East Offensive Player of the Week twice this year.
- The latest United Soccer Coaches Northeast Region Top 10 had the Seawolves ranked No. 5.
- Stony Brook is 6-10-3 all-time against Vermont, dating back to their first contest in 2001.
- The Seawolves were tabbed sixth in the America East preseason poll, just ahead of Hartford (12 points) and Binghamton (11 points). UMass Lowell (44 points), New Hampshire (42 points) and Albany (40 points) finished atop the poll heading into the 2018 season.
Scouting Vermont
- The Catamounts enter play at 9-5-0 (2-2-0 AE) on the season, most recently falling to Albany, 3-1 on Oct. 12.
- Senior Geo Alves leads Vermont in goals with nine so far this season, which is a tie for the most in the America East.
- Redshirt sophomore Thomas Clay and junior Aron Runarsson have split time in net pretty evenly this season. Clay is 5-2 on the season while Runarsson owns a 4-3 record.
- Vermont is coached by Rob Dow, who took over the program in 2016 after serving as an assistant.
- The Catamounts topped Stony Brook last year, 2-1 at LaValle Stadium.
- Vermont went 10-8-1 last season, falling to Albany in the America East Semifinal.
In The Ranks
- Gamwanya's five goals are good for fourth in the conference in that category. He ranks second in the conference with three game-winning goals.
- Senior Martieon Watson (Vessigny, Trinidad) ranks third in the conference in assists with five.
- Miesch's nine saves on Saturday night put him at 46 for the season, giving him the third-most saves in the conference.
