BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — A 17th-minute penalty was the decider on NCAA Men's Soccer opening day, as the Stony Brook men's soccer team fell 1-0 to LIU on Thursday afternoon in Brookville, N.Y.
Rondell Payne was called for a foul in the box and Matthias Heiland made it count, sending
Edmond Kaiser the other way on the spot kick for the deciding goal of the contest.
Kaiser made five saves for the Seawolves, four of which came in the second half, to keep Stony Brook in it but their attack was not able to muster the game-tying tally.
Sebastian Rojek was the lone Seawolves player to register multiple shots, totaling two in 85 minutes. He was also one off our to put shots on frame, all saved by LIU keeper Sergio Peralta.
STATS AND NOTES
- Rojek was one of six players to register a shot and one of four to put one on frame. Amit Magoz and Trausti Birgisson joined Payne and Rojek in testing the keeper.
- Kaiser made five saves on three different occasions during the 2021 campaign, including a season-high eight in a 3-1 win over UMBC.
