Football Set for Road Clash with Maine on Saturday

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook football returns to the road and will face Maine in Week 5 Coastal Athletic Association football action on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.

OPENING KICK
  • Stony Brook football will hit the road for a matchup against Maine on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 3:30 p.m., marking its third road trip during the month of September.
  • The Seawolves will play their fourth game in conference play of its first five.
  • After starting with three straight night games, Stony Brook will play in its second game that starts at 3:30 p.m.
  • The Seawolves come in to the Week 5 matchup having won two games in a row against Maine, rallying from a 20-7 halftime deficit at LaValle Stadium for a 28-27 nailbiter a season ago, picking up its first win of 2022 in the process.
  • Stony Brook will look to snap its road losing streak at the venue where it last won on the road, having defeated Maine 22-17 in the last matchup in Orono.
CAN'T SPELL TACKLER WITHOUT KALER
  • Linebacker Aidan Kaler finished with a career high 14 tackles against Richmond.
  • This represented the most tackles among any CAA player in Week 4.
  • He has 36 tackles in total (9.0) per game, ranking fourth in the CAA, and sits third in the league with 24 solo tackles.
  • Dating back to last season, Kaler has defended for at least five tackles in seven straight games. He has at least 10 tackles four times in his career, each coming in his last six outings.
  • Kaler entered the season as SBU's leading returning tackler, with 60.0 a season ago, which was third overall on the team in 2022 behind Reidgee Dimanche (74.0) and Carthell Flowers-Lloyd (70.0).
  • With Kaler as one of two defensive captains, the team has come up with nine takeaways through four games.
JOHNSON FINDING HIS STRIDE
  • James Madison transfer Anthony Johnson has caught himself at the top of Stony Brook's receiving charts, hauling in 19 catches for 261 yards and a touchdown for the Seawolves.
  • His 65.3 receiving yards per game are sixth in the CAA.
  • Johnson tallied 127 total yards against Arkansas State, the second-most receiving yards for a Stony Brook receiver in this decade.
  • He caught his first career touchdown pass against Richmond on Sept. 23.
DEFENSE CAUSING HAVOC
  • Stony Brook's defense has been active on the line and in the turnover game.
  • SBU has seven interceptions which leads the CAA and its nine takeaways are tied for seventh in the FCS.
  • The Seawolves have 12 sacks as a team (3.0/game), which is fourth in the league, registering multiple in every game this season. Nine different players have registered at least 1.0 sack this season.
  • Redshirt junior Nick Chimienti has a league-best three interceptions, already the most for a Seawolf since 2021. As a team, Stony Brook has already collected its most interceptions since grabbing 11 in the 2018 season.

STRONG ARE THE SPECIALISTS
  • Punter Clayton Taylor has started his season with 40.0 yards per punt, even with battling strong winds in the Richmond game.
  • He's put eight punts inside the 20, tied with fellow Australian Aaron Trusler (Richmond) for the most in the league.
  • Taylor downed a pair of punts inside the five-yard line against the Spiders in Week 4.
  • The punt coverage unit has combined to allow just one yard on opponent returns and is second in the CAA with a 40.0 average in net punting.
  • Kicker Spencer Biscoe has made a pair of field goals twice this season, going 2-for-2 amidst the tough conditions against Richmond.
